L'histoire de la diaspora basque
La prison dite des évêques est inscrite aux Monuments historiques depuis 2012. Placée au cœur de la vieille ville de St-Jean-Pied-de-Port, la Municipalité avait à cœur d’en faire un lieu dédié au patrimoine afin que les Saint-Jeannais se réapproprient ce lieu exceptionnel ainsi que leur histoire, et que les gens de passage la découvrent. Dans cette volonté, elle a souhaité renouveler le contenu avec 3 expositions permanentes.
La première est consacrée à la pelote basque et la seconde au vieux cimetière de la ville.
La troisième, enfin, est dédiée à l'histoire de la diaspora basque. La Municipalité a en effet fait l’acquisition de l’expo-photo proposée par le Gouvernement basque lors de la Journée Européenne de la Diaspora Basque fêtée le 8 septembre 2022. Elle l’a enrichie de vidéos de témoignages de l'expo "Eleketa, mémoires orales de Garazi-Baigorri" et de photos d’inscriptions de bergers basques sur les arbres dans l’ouest américain.
